Pennsylvania Dutch Hexmeister at large

Out of art and spiritual practices of a Pennsylvania Dutch hexmeister comes the Wisdom of the Gods, delivered by the Völva of the North. These words are meant to generate an inner dialog with self and with the Powers That Be. The blogger is only the messenger.

Name: Jj Starwalker
Location: Milo, ME, United States

Designer and artist Jj Starwalker, learned traditional "Pennsylvania Dutch" hex painting as a young girl from her grandmother. She followed many career paths through the years, only occasionally taking up the brush. When she did, however, she was always drawn to circular forms -- a counterpoint to the rectangular format of her work as the creative director of Vision IPD design studio in Beaufort, NC. In the last few years she has returned to the roots of her heritage, infusing the typical barn blessings with new insights and her signature use of metallic hues. She has exhibited work in many media, including early interpretations of the hex designs in batik at The Egg and The Eye -- now the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles, CA. Jj features her artwork on her art website www.DutchHexSign.com. For Internet and print design work, visit www.VisionIPD.com.

can we say "disorganized?"

I just learned today that the "artwalk" sales event is being moved from the waterfront street to a park in downdown Morehead City, AND that instead of assigned places, it will be "first come, first serve" for set up starting 3 pm tomorrow... so you can see what my mid-afternoon will be.

I think this is where the event SHOULD have been to start with, but on the other hand, they did managed to get a good promo piece in the paper last night that said, quite clearly, it was located on the waterfront! That is the type of organization that has plagued this event from the get-go, sorry to say. They are also supposed to have entertainment (musicians... ) this weekend, which the promo stuff said would be happening last weekend, too. We'll see...

So we will have "hex in the park". I am hoping my "practice safe hex" bumper sticker will arrive soon, too!

two new works

I'm still feeling a little frazzled and shell-shocked around the edges but am never-the-less feeling guardedly optimistic about the coming long weekend days. We have been fighting web demons on our hosting server for the past week and THIS webmistress has more than a few new gray hairs.

Tomorrow I'll be up and hit the gym at its 8 AM opening then head directly to the Museum for my photo-shoot. K is doing wash today, so bringing it IN tomorrow will be my only clothing chore... thus liberating me to do the shoot and then come home and attend to some creative stuff.

I am tentatively planning a trip to Jacksonville to visit Michaels and explore some other candle-making options. Our first 4 vigil candle-recycles were a real bust. They sooted up BADLY and only burned for a small fraction of the time their Mex import counterparts did. Am thinking smaller wick... as I found some of the wicking I used when trying this project before (with similar results, different wax) and it was large stuff similar to what we just bought. I am also thinking of getting pre-formed tea light wicks, as we have a bunch of the aluminum cups that we can recycle and I think this would be a good use for recycled wax.

I did finally get two of my new indoor hexen posted to www.dutchhexsign.com's store...
This is a new take on the Heart Chakra hex...

And this is a new version of a change hex.

This is the first in which I have covered the entire surface of the cloth with paint, and I like the effect.

I have obtained a couple of large quilting hoops, so soon will begin work on some larger fabric designs.

In the beginning...

In the beginning I had a blog and I didn't write much, despite having been -- before being a designer and long before being an artist -- a writer. I never could quite get into "morning pages" either.... And it languished and then I got involved with friends who blog and friends who write and I started blogging more frequently, on Live Journal about everything... life, art, spirituality...

And then came Yahoo into the fray with their 360 and I had friends there, so I started blogging there... but mostly it was just the same thing as on my LiveJournal, but with a lot more pictures since -- initially at least it was quite well connected with Flickr.

And then I got involved with a group of artists -- the Worldwide Women Artists Organization (WWAO) and it seems that they all blog here! So I am going to start trying to keep three blogs open.. with this one most thoroughly focused on ART. However, my life does not easily separate into little compartments... so ... do be surprised if I lapse into conversation about things of a spiritual nature. My art is highly spiritual... I paint Pennsylvania "Dutch" style hex signs -- circular, largely non-representational forms that are meant -- and empowered -- as prayers and invocations.

Currently the big news is the inclusion of my latest work Everything She Touches Changes (above) in the WWAO show being held at the Progress Energy Art Gallery in New Port Ritchie, FL during the months of February and March.
